The Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy has been engaged in preserving and perpetuating the Jeet Kune Do philosophy and way of life in Anne Arundel County, Maryland for over the last seven years. The Academy began as a private study group in 2010 within Gakhwangsa, a small Korean Buddhist temple located just outside of Baltimore, Maryland. In May of 2011, Sifu Singh travelled to Maryland to lead the first Jeet Kune Do East Coast Retreat at Gakhwang Temple.
Gakhwang Temple became a home for a small but dedicated group of Jeet Kune Do practitioners devoted to the path of self-perfection that reflected the unique environment of practicing the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do within a Zen temple rather than a gym or a commercial martial arts facility. The austere and calm environment allowed practitioners to fully immerse themselves in the introspective practices of Jeet Kune Do.
Although the students have outgrown the setting of Gakwhwang Temple, the focus of the Academy remains providing its members with the opportunity to encounter their true selves through Jeet Kune Do's paths of self-protection and self-perfection. The goal of the Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy is embody the concepts of functional fitness, philosophy, and martial arts that are the core of Sifu Singh's Jeet Kune Do Athletic Association. Stepping into a class at the Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy, you will at once understand that the enduring value of studying the martial arts lies in learning how to express and understand yourself as you continually grow in understanding your limitations and capabilities. The Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy is a unique place where men and women of all backgrounds can encounter themselves through the unique practices of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do.
