On Saturday, August 3rd, a group of women gathered at First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Odenton, but not for prayer group or Bible study. They came to train in the nationally accredited self-protection program designed just for women, "Escape to Gain Safety". The class was taught by Sifu JB Jaeger and was open to members of the congregation at First Lutheran as well as members of the Gambrills, Odenton, and Severn community. The ladies learned situational awareness skills as well as combative strategies designed specifically women threatened with assault.
"I've always wanted to know self-defense and I also did it for my girls," said Shashana, who brought her two daughters. "I really enjoyed the class. It was better than what I thought it would be. I would encourage every woman to do it. It's not just hitting people. He (Sifu Jaeger) teaches you to look at your surroundings."
For Brandi, it was her third Escape to Gain Safety workshop with Sifu Jaeger.
"As a single woman who lives alone, I'm aware that I have an increased chance of becoming a victim," she said. "Seeing other women learn how to protect themselves and the pure energy that they learn to project is just awesome. The world can be a crazy place. I'd rather have the tools to protect myself."
First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Odenton will host another free Escape to Gain Safety workshop on Saturday, October 12th, from 1230pm to 3pm. You can register by calling (410)-353-2387 or click here.
